Two years ago, my mom signed me up for a skating class at the park near my house so I would have something to do during the summer. At first I didn’t want to go because I didn’t know anyone but after watching the teachers skate, I decided I wanted to learn. For the first half of the class, the teachers would teach us how to skate and then we would practice the rest of the class. At the end of every class, we had a race and whoever came in first would get a prize.
The first day I fell a lot but I still wanted to be in the race. When the race started, I fell down hard and hurt my ankle so badly I had to sit out the next day. When I came back, I started to practice more and fell down less. When we had the race at the end of class that day, I was even able to take second place.
After the summer ended, I didn’t skate again until my school hosted an event at a local skating rink. I had a lot of fun and was happy I remembered how to skate from the last summer. My friends had fun too and we decided we should skate more often.
Now we go skating every Friday for three hours.
When I go skating, I don’t fall as often as I used to. I know how to jump on the skates and even know how to stop myself without using the wall. Most people are afraid to stop using the orange brake on the bottom of the skate because they think if they put their foot down, they will fall. I’ve learned that you won’t fall and if you keep calm, you can usually stop yourself from falling.
I like skating because it is a time to relax and spend time with my friends. I like listening to music and not having to think about homework while I’m skating. My goal this year is to learn how to skate backwards and to practice more often to become a better skater.
